Building Materials Industry Careers

workers on job site

The Building Materials Industry Needs You!

Building homes, schools, office buildings and communities can’t happen without professionals in the construction trades and lumber and building materials (LBM) industry.

Today there is a shortage of skilled workers in these industries.  These jobs pay well, are fun to work in, and have abundant opportunities for career growth.

Lumber and Building Materials

There are various roles in the building materials industry for anyone willing to work hard and be responsible.  These include Sales Specialist, Kitchen and Bath Designer, Building Component Designer, Material Estimator, Carpenter, and Truck Driver.

Training for these positions is often acquired on the job from attending seminars, workshops, and working alongside more experienced co-workers.  The Midwest Building Suppliers Association has a very good video at LBM Careers that provides great insight into your future in this industry.

Construction Trades

In the construction trades there are opportunities as electricians, plumbers and carpenters that do require additional education and apprenticeships, but not a four year college degree.  These jobs pay very well and offer long term job security.

Build Your Future Indiana

We’d encourage you to learn about construction careers and training opportunities now emerging in our state.  Build Your Future Indiana’s goal is to help Indiana residents to qualify for and get jobs in these high-demand occupations.  To learn more go to Build Your Future Indiana.

Henry Poor Lumber and Flooring Express

Jim Andrew Recognized as Sagamore of the Wabash

L-R: Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush, Jim Andrew and State Representative Sally Siegrist

Jim Andrew, CEO of Henry Poor Lumber Company, was surprised when Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush and State Representative Sally Siegrist, visited his home on January 1 to recognize him as a Sagamore of the Wabash.

This distinction is the highest recognition given by an Indiana Governor. Governor Eric Holcomb designated Jim with this honor for his many contributions to the Greater Lafayette community; his alma mater, Ball State University; and within the state Republican Party for the past 30 years. Jim’s business interests include Henry Poor Lumber, Flooring Express, Henry Poor Packaging and Henry Poor Manufacturing.

The award states, “In recognition of a lifetime of excellence and virtue that has brought credit and honor to Indiana.”  The Sagamore of the Wabash is a personal tribute given to those who have rendered a distinguished service to the state or to the governor. Among those who have received Sagamores are astronauts, presidents, politicians, ambassadors, artists, musicians, and those who have contributed greatly to our state’s heritage.

Jim remarked when presented his certificate, “This is quite a surprise. I am very honored to have been selected for this recognition.  It’s a tribute to my family and all those who have supported me throughout my career.”

Congratulations Jim on a well-deserved honor.
