Choosing the Right Roofing Shingle

GAF Roofing ShinglesHow to Choose the Right Roofing Shingle for Your Home

The best roofing shingles for your home will meet your budget, provide the durability your roof needs, and create the curb appeal you want.
.

Meeting Your Budget

Your roof may be one of the largest investments you make in your home, and with so many types and styles, you can find shingles that fit a range of budgets.

Rugged Enough to Protect Your Home

GAF Roofing Shingles in storm

Your choice in shingles should be designed to help protect your home from the elements.

High Winds …. Shingles with strong adhesive ratings and those that offer a Wind warranty are preferred.

Hail …. Impact-resistant shingles may be a good option if your area is impacted by significant hailstorms.

Sun Exposure … Highly reflective ENERGY STAR®-certified shingles can help reduce temperatures in your attic and keep your house cooler.

Moisture …. Stain resistance shingles work well in regions experiencing high moisture and blue-green algae discoloration.

What’s Your Style?

Asphalt shingles are available in multiple styles for contemporary to historical home designs. These include 3-tab, architectural, and designer shingles. While these types mostly differ in look, some may offer better durability as well.3 styles of shingles

Architectural
Architectural shingles, also known as “dimensional” or “laminate” shingles, offer a richer, multidimensional quality that looks a bit like wood or slate roofing.

Designer
A designer shingle, often called a “premium” or “luxury” shingle, offers higher-end multidimensional designs, premium protection from weathering, and maximum energy efficiency. Designer shingles take on the most realistic look of old-world roofing materials.

3-Tab
A 3-tab shingle is the simplest type of roofing shingle. They are built from a single layer of asphalt, which makes them lie flat right against the roof.

What’s Your Color?

Shingles come in a wide range of colors. Consider a color that complements your house or neighborhood. Neutrals are always safe — and enduring — if you don’t have a preference.

The Signs Your Roof Needs Replacing

Home with GAF Shingles

Roofs, like anything else associated with your home, do not last forever.  Depending on the type of weather your roof has been exposed to over the years, a roof may last 15 – 20 years.
.
It’s a good idea to inspect your roof in the early Fall, particularly if you live in areas of the country that experience extreme weather … like Indiana.

.
Signs Your Roof Needs Replacing

home with old roofHere are some early signs that your roof may be due to have new shingles installed.

  • A leak in the attic.
After a strong storm or wind-driven rain, take a look in the attic for signs of leaking. It could indicate damaged shingles, inadequate underlayment or deteriorated flashing.
  • Blistering or peeling interior or exterior paint.
Moisture trapped in the house due to poor ventilation can cause exterior paint to peel and blister.
  • Stains on interior ceilings and walls – mold or mildew growth.
Stains, or worse, mold can be caused by leaks from outside the house or moisture trapped inside.
  • Exterior decay in sheathing and/or siding.
Excess moisture can also contribute to decay.
  • Missing, cracked, or curled shingles.
Dry, cracked, or easily broken shingles have reached the end of their useful life, and it’s time to invest in a new roof.
  • Dark, “dirty-looking” areas on your roof.
Vegetation, fungus, mold, or algae growth can cause dark stains on your shingles. That doesn’t necessarily mean you need a new roof, but if you do choose to replace your shingles look for ones that offer stain protection.
  • Excessive energy costs.
Inadequate ventilation can possibly drive up your household cooling costs by trapping hot air in the attic. Attic moisture can also drip into your insulation, reducing its effectiveness.
