Community Involvement: Habitat for Humanity

Henry Poor Community Involvement
Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette has been making a difference in people’s lives in our community for over 25 years. With the help of thousands of volunteers, Habitat has built 189 homes. Along with the many hours contributed by volunteers, Habitat has benefitted from the generosity of our local habitat_logobusinesses through donations of materials and monetary support. Habitat Executive Director Doug Taylor commented, “We have been blessed with the tremendous generosity of many, many people in the Lafayette community like Henry Poor. As a result we have positively impacted the lives of many families”.

Henry Poor and HOME WORKS Enjoy Involvement
Henry Poor and HOME WORKS have been actively involved with the Lafayette chapter of Habitat for Humanity through its contributions of their associates’ time, donations, and providing building materials. Jim Andrew, who worked on the first home Henry Poor helped build, stated, “Taking part in and watching an organization like Habitat make such a positive impact in our community is wonderful. I know everyone at Henry Poor and HOME WORKS who has participated has enjoyed their involvement.” Last year Henry Poor took part through BAGL in the Home Builders Blitz 2008, and is currently in the planning stage of its next Habitat project.

Season’s Greetings from Henry Poor & Home Works

Each year during the Holiday Season we take some time and reflect on the past twelve months and remember those who have played an important part in our lives. For those of us who depend on residential and commercial construction for our livelihoods, it has been a challenging year. Through this time, it is important to know that you have friends and family around you. At Henry Poor Lumber and Home Works we are blessed to be surrounded by customers and friends like you. We would also like to extend our thoughts and prayers to those serving our country and who may be far from home at this time of year.

We recognize that there are many families who are struggling during this economic slowdown. With the local factory lay-offs and business job losses, Henry Poor Lumber and Home Works, have supported the United Way, Habitat for Humanity, and many community and church organizations this year. It is our small way of giving back to our community. We would encourage our customers, friends, and vendors to continue giving to local charitable causes and helping those who need some extra assistance at this time.

With 2009 on the horizon, we look with anticipation of a gradual economic up turn. During the coming year, we will all be challenged to find new and better ways to serve our customers. Our goal is to continue to be a leader in promoting “green technologies and products”. This will lead to greater energy conservation and cost savings for our customers. We will also strive to provide higher levels of customer service that will help lower the overall costs of doing business with Henry Poor Lumber and Home Works. We welcome your ideas and suggestions on how we can better serve you.

We look forward to working with each of you in the coming year and all of us at HENRY POOR LUMBER and HOME WORKS would like to wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season and prosperous 2009.

Thank you!

Economical, Comfortable, Energy efficient

Heat & Glo fireplace inserts offer the warmth and comfort of a wood burning fireplace without the hassle of chopping and burning wood.  Heat & Glo inserts are airtight, which means they won’t leave you with a drafty room or affect your indoor air quality.  These inserts also claim some of the highest efficiency ratings in the industry, making them an economical solution to your heating needs.  Since often the most popular living space is the room with the fireplace, using a fireplace insert to warm this room, may allow you to adjust the temperature to a lower setting in the rest of the home.  This maintains the comfort in the primary living area, while reducing your overall energy bill.

Henry Poor Founding Member of “Green Suppliers Council”

Jim Andrew recently announced that Henry Poor Lumber has become a founding member of the Green Suppliers’ Council, a nationwide network of building material dealers formed to promote and facilitate green building in the residential construction market.

“Whether your interest is in reducing global warming, lowering your utility bills, or creating a healthy indoor environment, green building makes sense,” says Jim Andrew, Henry Poor Lumber Co. President. “In our role as a home builder’s largest single supplier, we provide not only products, but also installation and building science expertise. Our mission is to develop programs that will help our customers build green homes efficiently and cost-effectively.”

The Council held its first meeting June 18 – 20 in Toronto, hosted by CMHC International, the export division of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.  At this meeting Jim received an overview of the state of the worldwide green building movement and an in-depth examination of the latest trends in green home building.

Local Green Initiative
Locally Henry Poor has teamed with
Environmental Recycling Inc to recycle all materials that are generated on new construction jobsites. By sending all construction material waste through ERI Recycling none of these products find their way to a transfer station, landfill, or an incinerator. This also facilitates projects requiring L.E.E.D. certification.  Products handled by ERI Recycling from new construction sites include wood, drywall, vinyl siding, cardboard, paper, plastic, copper, aluminum, scrap metals, carpet pad, concrete, brick, and asphalt.

For more information on green products, services, and resources available at Henry Poor Lumber Co., call Jim Andrew (765) 474-1388 or e-mail at jaahplc@henrypoor.com.
