Debbie Davis Retires

Debbie Davis at Henry Poor Lumber

Debbie Davis Leaves Behind 33 Years of Heart, Soul

Debbie Davis at Henry Poor Lumber

Debbie on the job for 33 years.

.
For 33 years Debbie Davis has been a “rock”, according to Jim Andrew, that has provided a steady presence and significant contributions in the many areas she has been involved.

During her tenure at Henry Poor Lumber, Debbie has been responsible for payables, receivables, safety, collections, IT, HR, special events, and assisting Jim with other business ventures.

Debbie began working at Home Works in Eastway Plaza on June 26, 1989 as the only accounting person at that location. She subsequently moved to the Home Work’s Market Square location when the business relocated to a larger facility.  In 2002 Debbie moved to the new Henry Poor Lumber store on Brady Lane to become the credit and collections manager.  She is currently in the Human Resources department where she is involved in a number of different areas of the company.

Jim Andrew remarked, “Debbie has been my “work wife” and close personal friend for more years than I can count. Her involvement in so many areas of the company has helped our different businesses move forward and grow significantly over the years.

I have depended on Debbie to help me manage my responsibilities at Henry Poor, my political campaigns, and personal affairs.  But most of all when I have dealt with business and personal challenges, she has been there to help take care of the details and be a steady presence and friend.  After 33 years on the job, her daily involvement will be missed.”

Jim also noted that Debbie will still come in a few hours each week to work with him on his schedule and ongoing projects.

Debbie reflected, “The best part about working at James A. Andrew, Inc. is the people and friends I have made.  I couldn’t ask for a better family to work for than the Andrew family.”

Childhood Cancer Awareness

Little Nora Jean’s Fighting Machine

Cancer Awareness delivery truck

The latest edition to the Henry Poor Lumber delivery fleet, “Nora Jean’s Fighting Machine.”

With the recent addition to Henry Poor Lumber’s delivery fleet of a new Freightliner flatbed moffett truck, we wanted to honor a very special person who has shown us all what toughness and resilience look like.

So we christened our new delivery truck “Nora Jean’s Fighting Machine”.

An Extraordinarily Difficult Time

Jim Andrew’s granddaughter, Nora Jean Dane, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer at the age of 3.  Her treatment required extensive brain surgery, chemotherapy and proton radiation treatments that lasted over a year.  From a future that promised little hope to being declared cancer free in 2019, little Nora Jean demonstrated the resilience and heart that got her, and her family, through an extraordinarily difficult time.

Raising Awareness of Childhood Cancer
Nora Jean Cancer Fighting Machine

Little Nora Jean test driving part of the new delivery truck named in her honor.

Did you know that each year, the parents of approximately 15,700 children in the United States will hear the words “your child has cancer”.  This diagnosis can devastate a family.

Because of the personal experience the Henry Poor Lumber and Flooring Express family has been through with Nora Jean, they are committed to raising the awareness of the impact of childhood cancer on the lives of many young people and their families.

 Childhood Cancer Facts
  • 43 children per day are expected to be diagnosed with cancer. That is 1 in every 333 children in the United States.
  • Cancer is the number one cause of death by disease among children.
  • The average cost of a stay in a hospital for a child with cancer is $40,000.
  • Only 4% of the billions of dollars that are annually spent on cancer research and treatments are directed towards treating childhood cancer.
  • Since 1980, fewer than 10 drugs have been developed for use in children with cancer, as compared with the hundreds of drugs that have been created exclusively for adults.
  • More than 95% of childhood cancer survivors will have a significant health-related issue by the time they are 45 years of age. These health-related issues are side-effects of either cancer or more commonly, the result of its treatment.
Morgan Adams Foundation logoJoining the Fight

In honor of little Nora Jean, Henry Poor Lumber will donate 20 cents for every mile the Nora Jean Fighting Machine logs in 2020 to the Morgan Adams Foundation.

The Morgan Adams Foundation funds kids’ cancer research. They raise awareness of, and educate our communities about the need for pediatric and young adult specific cancer treatments.

Working with leading researchers and physicians, the Morgan Adams Foundation funds new and innovative ideas that will improve cancer treatment effectiveness, overall outcomes, survival rates and quality of life while minimizing the devastating side effects current treatments have on children.
