Henry Poor Lumber — Always More Than A Lumber Company
Henry Poor Lumber has been serving Lafayette and Central Indiana contractors, remodelers, interior design professionals, and retail customers since 1918.
Locally owned and operated for over 95 years, Henry Poor Lumber Co. has based our business on a commitment to supply quality building materials, custom mill work, engineered components, cabinets, countertops and floor coverings along with superior personal service.
Early History
Initially named Ed Munger Lumber Co. we sold lumber, window sash, doors, blinds and interior finish products from our first location on Ferry Street in Lafayette, IN. We eventually moved to a second location at the intersection of State Street and South River Road in West Lafayette, IN where we became Munger and Poor Lumber Co., and eventually Henry Poor Lumber Co.
It was here that we first sold cabinets, counter tops and floor coverings, started our mill shop, built custom windows and doors, and installed our first computer system to manage sales and inventory.
Moving, Expanding To Accommodate Change
In 1987 we opened Home Works in Eastway Plaza on Sagamore Parkway, before moving our floor covering, cabinet and countertop showroom to a larger location at Market Square in 2001. Our design center allowed us to showcase our top cabinet, countertop and floor covering lines for both remodelers and those building new homes.
Construction of the new South River Road and State Street interchange in 1996 forced Henry Poor Lumber to find a new home. Jim Andrew relocated his business to the corner of Concord Road and Brady Lane, an ideal location to serve the growing Greater Lafayette community.
The new 65,000 sq. ft. Henry Poor Lumber facility provides more room for growth while our 15,000 sq. ft. building material showroom allows us to display fully functioning doors, windows, cabinets, counter tops, roofing, siding and fireplaces.
Adjusting To Today’s Marketplace
With customer buying habits changing, Henry Poor opened Flooring Express in November 2011.
At the same time Home Works’ cabinet and countertop displays and product lines moved to Henry Poor’s Brady Lane location.
With over 30,000 square feet, Flooring Express is Lafayette’s largest in-stock floor covering showroom for carpet, hardwood, ceramic and laminate flooring. It is located on Maple Point Drive near the Tippecanoe Mall. “Home Works at Henry Poor” new display area continues to give new home builders, contractors, and remodelers a wide selection of the latest styles in counter tops and cabinets for the home.
What’s the Future Hold?
Henry Poor Lumber and Flooring Express continue to look to the future as we bring new products to our customers that last longer, are safer, save money and protect the environment.
We also offer design and specialized contractor services. But as we grow, adapt and change we always promise to be the place you can go for “personalized service and the best values in town”.
